This is our little chalet on the slopes of the mountains in Asheville, North Carolina. I took the interior shots only because we have been so eternally grateful to be stationary in such a cozy, fully equipped little spot for the past week. It really felt like we could recharge our batteries here.
So it is here, after 60 days of constant driving (over 9000km!), camping and meeting wonderful couchsurfing hosts, that our spectacular road trip ends; in this quaint little arty town with loads of organic and sustainable development movements. Russell and I are now on our way to a farm called Brahma Ridge, where we'll camp until Sunday to attend our friends, Katie and Pedro's wedding.
We have organised to WWOOF on a farm about 3 hours drive from here from Wednesday next week onwards. The family whom we chose to stay with sound like a wonderful, warm and very down to earth and hard working unit, who have managed to create a complete self sustaining system for themselves. We are going to learn cheese-making, welding, blacksmith skills, installing solar power, food preservation and storage and, of course, organic farming of animals, fruit and veggies. We are really looking forward to it!
For our loved ones who don't know; WWOOF stands for Willing Workers On Organic Farms. You stay for free with a family who farm organically, work a minimum of 5 hours a day, get training on the job as well as 3 wholesome meals a day. Sometimes you get paid a modest amount for your work too.
We'll be sure to post pictures and stories of this adventure as often as we can!
Asheville is nestled between the Blue Mountain Ridge and during our time here we have done some beautiful forest walks.
The car you see through the foliage here is our jeep-beast that we rented here in Asheville. (Americans seem to really like their big cars!) |
We took a drive to Grandfather mountain (over 300 million years old) yesterday. Absolutely spectacular. The photos speak for themselves.
I have decided that I am both terrified and absolutely in awe of bears. |
Playful otters...super cute! They are like water doggies. |
